A gas line looks simple until you're the one holding a wrench in front of a meter. Around Highland, Redlands, and the rest of the Inland Empire, most homes are on black iron pipe with a mix of copper flex or CSST for the last few feet to each appliance. All three materials are fine when they're installed and tested right. Where things go sideways is at the joints, at the transitions, and at the flex connectors that get bent, unbent, and bent again every time somebody rolls out the dryer or the range to clean behind it.

The first sign of trouble is almost always smell. That rotten-egg odor is mercaptan, added on purpose so you notice a leak. A quick note on permits: San Bernardino County requires one on any gas work beyond swapping a flex connector, and inspectors have gotten stricter about pressure test paperwork over the last few years.
